The Fascination Of Indoor Plumbing

I believe you are considering how anybody can find something religious in having in-door plumbing

. Well this is how. One day, as I entered the restroom at my workplace, the words "glorified outhouse" came into my mind. My next thought was, "but what if this looks like an actual outhouse and this was the middle of winter?" Immediately , I felt a new sense of appreciation of this "glorified outhouse".

Then I went back to a memory of my 11th summer. The majority of my teen years were spent in my great-grandmother's home. She didn't have indoor plumbing. So I spent the 1st 7 years of my life going out to the woods to use the outhouse, night and day ; summer, winter, spring or fall. I can recollect washing my hands at an outdoor pump and taking my baths in a huge, metal, circular bin that we used as a tub.

Right before my eighth birthday, I went to Washington Dc to live. There I experienced my first "culture shock". I'd never seen in-door bathrooms before, or hot water exiting a tap. I'd never even imagined there was such a thing! It was such an amazing joy for me to not need to go outside to use the restroom or to need to boil a couple of pots of water for, or to sit in a big metal bin to take my bath.

In my 11th year, I went back to visit my great-grandmother for the summer. Joy of all joys, she was having a bathroom built into her house. I remembered my great-grandmother was so very happy and so very excited about having a bathroom inside the house. In the midst of this memory, the Holy Spirit magnified my remembrance of my reaction to my great-grandmother's excitement.

Though I was actually happy I wouldn't have to go "trekking" thru the woods to the outhouse anymore, I actually didn't see why she was making such a giant deal out of it. So that the Spirit of the Lord made me see that, since I spent the last 3 years in the town with indoor plumbing, I was no longer "impressed" by it. I had come to a place where I took it for granted. Thru His magnification of that portion of memory, He lead me to see how we, the people of Almighty God, who have got the in-dwelling presence of the meaning of the Living God within us, are not pumped up about it.

Though we have been taught about the size of His power, the strength of His purpose and the significance of the job He plays in our humdrum lives ; for many folks, His in-dwelling has become "standing quo". We have come to a place where we take His Holy Presence inside us for granted ; thinking about Him and calling on Him just when we have got a private need.

I enjoin you to take a moment, take one or two mins, and remember the excitement you felt when you first accepted the Lord Jesus into your heart and when you received the Baptism of His Holy Spirit. Remember the joy you had when you discovered that not only will devil do not have a hold on you, but the tables have been turned and now you are the one with the power AND the authority over him ( Luke 10:19 ). Remember continually, through everyday of your "in-door plumbing". In fact, we do not have to go to the "mountain" or to a church, to meet up with Him. The meaning of the God Almighty lives inside you and has given you His extremely word that he will be able to never leave you!
