Welcome to an entirely unique language. Japanese is the official language of Japan, best known as "Nihongo" in the Japanese native language. Japanese Symbols, Characters, Calligraphy are all common terms for Kanji. Kanji are the symbols which are used to express ideas, versus just sounds. While it's true understanding pronunciation and speaking basic Japanese is usually an easy task, learning to read and write Japanese is a little more difficult.
