The Features That Make Walk In Showers Ideal For The Elderly

Showering and bathing are clearly important for every human being

. Not only do we feel better about ourselves when we are fresh out of the shower, but keeping clean can help us avoid infections and diseases. For the elderly, mobility can be a problem, making getting in and out of the bath or shower difficult. The walk in shower has proved to be a significant invention to help ease these bathing issues.

There are various difficulties associated with bathing for the elderly or infirm. The climbing or lifting of the legs involved with getting in and out of the shower or bath can put real strain on the bodies of elderly people and can lead to them losing their balance or tripping and hurting themselves. Most shower and bath designs fail to accommodate for the needs of the elderly and for those who decide to maintain their independence, bathing without help can be tough in the regular suites that are fitted in most houses.

Walk in showers allow the elderly to bathe in comfort and independence. This is because they feature a range of features that make showering safer for those of us who are vulnerable to slipping or falling. Helpful hand rails can give elderly bathers a much greater sense of security as they manoeuvre into and around the shower unit. These grab bars, even if the user doesn't feel that they need to hold on to them most of the time, provide peace of mind; as it's good to know they are there just in case they do slip.

Several designs for walk in showers feature a lowered entrance, making access easier as the user doesn't have to navigate a step to enter the cubicle. An especially wide entrance, often without troublesome doors that can tend to stick and be difficult to open, also provides ease of access. The shape of the cubicle can allow it to be designed without a door as curved panels can prevent water from escaping the unit. A further measure to improve bathing safety and comfort is the inclusion of a seat, which in some designs can be folded away as and when it is needed. Some walk in shower designs feature a seat next to the entrance, thus allowing the bather to sit down and simply lift their legs into the cubicle.

Bathing can be particularly therapeutic for the elderly, and being able to bathe in comfort can make a great difference to their lives.
