, Canadas Research in Motion or RIM finally obliges its markets with its first serious business phone. This time being hip by having last years upscale camera features in the new Blackberry Torch 9800.

Its the first Blackberry to have a 5-megapixel camera. Sporting its very first slider form factor that combines touchscreen and the signature blackberry-esque portrait QWERTY keyboard, the Torch can be said to be RIMs first innovative handset since its first Storm handset almost 2 years back.

Who said a serious business phone like a Blackberry cant be as lighthearted as any on the market? The Blackberry Torch 9800 makes it as the new RIM flagship handset thats also a great camera and music phone.


Starting with a 3.2-inch TFT resistive touchscreen display with half-VGA (480 x 360) resolution for a satisfying movie watching experience on the road, it gets a 5-megapexial camera with LED flash, geo tagging, image stabilization, continuous autofocus and VGA video recording.

Theres no accelerometer but it has the proximity sensor for auto-turn off when held against the face in a call. The optical touch-sensitive trackpad is also there.

While still missing out on an FM radio, it has capable media players for the audio files in the MP3, WMA, eAAC+, FLAC and OGG formats as well as video in the MP4, WMV and H.263/H.264 codecs.

Stereo headphones of your choice are possible with its industry standard 3.5mm audio jack while its A2DP profile support allows you the option for wireless stereo headphones. You also get 30 hours of continuous music playback from its battery.

Measuring 111 x 62 x 14.6mm and weighing a rather hefty 161g, the Blackberry Torch 9800 slider will be offered its markets only in black but carries a distinct styling with chrome trims around the body.


It carries a wealth of data and radio connectivity technologies starting with a quad band for both its UMTS on 3G and GMS on 2G. It comes with HSDPA/HSUPA data speeds for broadband internet surfing experience as well as class 10 GPRS/EDGE data speeds of up to 236.8 Kbps on 2G. SatNav functionality gets an in-built GPS radio with A-GPS support and the expected Blackberry Maps.

Apart from its 512 MB RAM and 512 MB ROM for OS and application files, it enjoys a generous 4GB of internal memory backed by microSD external memory expandability for up to 32 GB. It even comes with a 4GB microSD card included in its sales pack. Its 1300 mAh li-ion battery delivers up to 5.5 hours on 2G and just slightly higher on 3G and 432 hours on standby.

Running on a 624 MHz processor under the hood, the Blackberry Torch 9800 uses the latest Linux-based Blackberry OS v6.0 and exudes social networking graces. Apart from its now signature BES access to secure corporate emails, you get social feeds, RSS feeds and integrated SNS like Facebook, Twitter and MySpace as well as a document reader to make it an ebook.
