The First Main Satellite Of The Planet Saturn(titan)
Titan is the first main satellite of the planet Saturn and the second major satellite in the solar system
. Only Jupiter's moon Ganymede is larger. Titan has a diameter of 3,200 miles (5,150 kilometers), even better than the planets Mercury and Pluto. The combination of Titan's size and its internal mass indicates that it almost certainly have a rocky core covered with a shell of water ice. The temperature of Titan's surface is -290 degrees F ( -179 degrees C). This is so low that no bodies of liquid water on the facade could persist over long periods of time.
Titan is the lone satellite in the solar system with a noteworthy atmosphere. In fact, Titan's atmospheric pressure is about 1.6 times that of Earth. Titan's exterior is almost entirely hidden by its atmosphere, a broad red haze that in some ways resembles the smog found on Earth. About 95 percent of Titan's impression is nitrogen. Approximately 3 percent is methane, which is a hydrocarbon (a compound of hydrogen and carbon). The remaining 2 percent consists of hydrogen, other hydrocarbons, and possibly argon. Little water vapor exists in the satellite's atmosphere. Hydrocarbons may rain down on the surface, forming enclosed seas, lakes, and ponds.
Voyager 1 and Voyager 2, two space probes launch via the United States, provide information about Titan in 1980 and 1981. The Cassini spacecraft, which began orbiting Saturn in the summer of 2004, agreed cloud-penetrating radar and other instrument calculated to "see" during Titan's atmosphere. It also carried a query called Huygens that was considered to drop through Titan's atmosphere and ground on its outside
Using next to-infrared colors--some three times deeper in the red visible to the person eye--these images expose the surface with abnormal clarity. The color image shows a false-color combination of three previous images. The yellow areas correspond to the hydrocarbon-rich regions, while the green area are the icier regions. Here, the methane cloud appears white, as it is clear in all three colors.
The Cassini-Huygens mission is a helpful project of NASA, the European Space group and the Italian Space organization. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a separation of the California Institute of skill in Pasadena, manages the Cassini-Huygens mission for NASA's Office of Space Science, Washington, D.C. The Cassini orbiter was designed, developed and assembled at JPL. The visible and infrared mapping spectrometer team is based at the University of Arizona, Tucson.
