In 1869, the Cincinnati Red Stockings began to pay salaries to its team member, and since then, Cincinnati had its and USs first professional baseball team. In the same year, Cincinnati Red Stockings had its first professional game with another team. In 1889, Cincinnati Red Stockings changed its name into Cincinnati Reds because the former name was too long.

Cincinnati Reds is one of the greatest baseball teams in MLB. In the season of 1869 to 1970, they won 130 matches without a break. In 1985, Cincinnati Reds famous batter Peter Rose made a record of 4192 base hits. In 1986, he improved his record to 4265 base hits. The record is kept until now. In the one century MLB matches, Cincinnati Reds got four champions, they are the 1940, the 1975, the 1976 and the 1990.

The city of Cincinnati built the Cincinnati Reds Great American Ball Park in 2003. The new home field is in the central of the city and beside the Ohio River. It can hold 42 thousand people, which is the landmark of the city and the most advanced baseball field in United Sates.

This baseball field has a very big museum for the Cincinnati Reds. The museum exhibits the history of the team and the honor received by Cincinnati Reds. There are many precious mementos, one of which is a table recorded the salaries paid for the team members in Cincinnati Reds early time. Although the salaries of the current star players reached a number of more than 10 million dollars, 2000 is the highest salary in 1869. The museum also exhibits a lot documents and objects about Peter Rose. Theres a high wall beside the stairway, there are 4192 baseballs on it and these balls remind people about the record made by Peter Rose. The curator of the museum said that only four teams of the 28 MLB teams have their museums and Cincinnati Reds is one of them, and even the biggest of all.

Though the baseball business is only a small part of Cincinnatis economy, its influence is very big. Cincinnatis mayor said because of the Cincinnati Reds, Cincinnati had the reputation equal to New York and Los Angeles in some degree.
