The Fishing Village of Denia Spain in Costa Blanca
The Fishing Village of Denia Spain in Costa Blanca
On the east coast of the Cost Blanca in the Mediterranean Sea, is yet another historic Spanish fishing port by the name of Denia. Situated some 85 kilometres north east of Alicante and between Valencia, or, about one hour's drive from either city. As one would expect, the well maintained harbour of Denia is also home to many beautiful luxury yachts as well as the old and the new fishing vessels anchored there, and delightful sea front cafes, bars and restaurants, not to mention the many boutiques which flourish on the harbour front.
This charming, combined Spanish holiday resort and fishing port, has a great deal to offer to the discerning holiday maker, especially to those who have the eye to look behind the scenes, and are not there to just soak up the Sun. The port is a fabulous area to relax and view the yachts pulling in and out of the port.
For example, on the hill sides nearby to this ancient port can be found Iberian ruins, but to inspire further thoughts is the fact that this now holiday resort come hive of the Spanish fishing industry, had like most of Spain at the time of the first century BC, been absorbed into the Roman Empire. The name of the town was then given as Dianum and It was a Roman general by the name of Quintus Sertorius, (circa 123 BC to 72 BC), who established a Roman naval base nearby.
So, should you be chilling out in one of the sea front cafes as you are watching a golden sunset, sipping your wine, or eating your freshly caught fish as you look out onto the harbour, try to imagine this humble fishing port playing host to the many Roman war ships, that must have dropped anchor there to replenish the ships stores of food, oil, and armoury. Not forgetting of course, the Roman sailors on shore leave, who could well have walked right over where you are sitting as they freed themselves from their sea duties for a precious night or two.
So here is just a small part of a rich tapestry of history which has taken place in the town of Denia, which according to folk lore was named after the Greek goddess Diana, (taken from the Roman temple of Diana, of which the ruins are to be found there) but also in Arabic is known as Deniyya which means lowland.
