The Five Biggest Lakes In The Lake District

The Lake District, situated in the North West area of England

, is one of the most beautiful places anywhere in the United Kingdom. Holding several records, including that of being the largest National Park in the UK, covering a total area of 2,292 square kilometres, as well as being home to the tallest peak in England, Scafell Peak (which stands at 978 metres tall), the Lake District has over 80 individual bodies of water in its vicinity, ranging from vast and expansive lakes to small and charming reservoirs.

Of the many areas of water that are apparent in the Lake District, according to the Lake District National Park and the Environment Agency in the UK, the following are the five biggest lakes that are encompassed within this National Park.

1. Windermere. Possibly the most popular of all of the bodies of water, Windermere is also by far the largest in terms of length at 16.8 kilometers long and overall volume, as well as being one of the widest (1.6 kilometres) and deepest (64 metres, second only to Wastwater at 76 metres) stretches of water in the area.

2. Ullswater. At 11.8 kilometres long and 1.02 kilometres wide, Ullswater is the second biggest piece of water in the Lake District, but is said to be the most scenic of not only any lake in the area, but in the whole of England.

Similar to Windermere, Ullswater is a particularly popular area for tourists, irrelevant of their own personal interests. Featuring boat rides around the lake and several quaint eateries located nearby, it offers the perfect opportunity to use it as a relaxing base for a more adventured holiday, such as for climbing the nearby Helvellyn mountain, which at 950 metres tall is the third highest mountain in England.

3. Derwentwater. Whilst Windermere may be the largest expanse of water overall and Ullswater covers a greater area, Derwentwater is actually wider than both of these and at 1.91 kilometres wide, it is almost twice as wide as Ullswater and a third wider than Windermere.

There are several islands which are apparent on the lake, with the largest being Derwent Island, which houses an 18th century Italian-style house that is open to the public throughout the year.

4. Bassenthwaite Lake. Considering Bassenthwaite Lake is one of the largest lakes in the Lake District and is respectable in both length and width at 6.2 kilometres and 1.1 kilometres respectively, it is actually one of the shallowest, diving no deeper than 19 metres.

Furthermore, Bassenthwaite Lake also holds the title of being the only piece of water in the Lake District that was actually officially named a lake.

5. Coniston Water. At 8.7 kilometres long, 0.73 kilometres wide and covering an area of 4.9 kilometres, Coniston Water is one of the largest pieces of water in England. Whilst this may be what it is known for to some, it gained its popularity as being the lake in which Sir Malcolm Campbell achieved speeds of over 140 miles per hour in a speed boat on 9 August 1939, setting a new world record.
