The Founding Of The Dodge Brothers Company

In 1900, Horace and John Dodge had the idea to begin producing different engines and chassis components for other automotive manufacturers

. There was a real demand for the parts, and they began to sell to Olds Motor Vehicle Company and even Ford Motor Company. But just thirteen short years later, the brothers decided that it was time to start putting their talents to work for themselves and they began creating different vehicles.

First Attempt

To get away from just supplying parts to other auto manufacturers, the brothers created the Dodge Model 30. It had four cylinders and was marketed to the public as an upscale option compared to its main competitor, the Ford Model T. At the time, most vehicles used wood to create the body of the car but the Dodge brothers went with an all steel body construction. This meant a heavier, more durable vehicle for the average person to drive. Because of their previous success with auto parts and the quality product they made available to the public, by 1916, Dodge was ranking second in sales.

Models for the Army

Around the same time, the brothers were creating vehicles to be used by the U.S. Army. The Model 30 Touring car was taking soldiers to different locations in Mexico and stories began to circulate about the success and durability of the vehicles. At one point, it is said that Lt. George Patton led soldiers in to conduct a raid. When they came out with several prisoners, they decided to tie them to the hoods of the three vehicles. This created quite an uproar as the men returned to their headquarters.

Death of the Brothers

Tragedy struck in 1920 when John Dodge died of pneumonia. Shortly after Horace passed away and the company was passed down to the widows. The company struggled at first, sinking down in the rankings due to low sales and unsuccessful attempts to get things in order. The company was also working to get into the light trucks market. Despite their hard work, the widows decided that it was time to sell the company.

Headed to Chrysler

While the company was originally sold to Dillion, Read, and Company, the brand did not flourish as everyone had hoped. There were still some positive changes and additions to the line but it was obvious that someone needed to step in and take over. In 1928, the company was sold to the Chrysler Corporation. Today the manufacturer remains part of the Fiat brand and offers compact cars, mid sized sedans, SUVs, and both light and heavy-duty trucks. Many of the older models have be brought back and revamped, including models like the Challenger.
