The Four Fundamental Functions Of Toothpaste Explored

Virtually everybody uses toothpaste nowadays

Virtually everybody uses toothpaste nowadays. It simply feels improper to go about cleaning your teeth without toothpaste, much the same way it would feel improper to go about bathing without a piece of soap. Few of us, however, pause to reflect on the purpose served by the toothpaste we so religiously use. For most of us, use of the toothpaste is simply the 'done thing.' We do it because we found it that way, and because others do it. The rational person, however, would want to know why they do the various things that they do. The rational person won't just go about using toothpaste because it is the done thing. They want to know why they do so - and that is precisely what we now proceed to explore, as we look at the four fundamental of toothpaste in the oral cleaning process.

The first function served by the toothpaste is that of removing dental plaque from the teeth. The mechanism by which toothpaste does this is very much like the mechanism via which soap attracts dirt from clothes. It is about the plaque molecules getting attracted to the toothpaste molecules, and therefore being pulled out of the teeth surface, and then being washed out of the mouth as you go about the rinsing process that follows the brushing. It is also about the plaque, as a substance, being scrubbed by the abrasive in the toothpaste. The plaque removal role served by the toothpaste is a very important one, by the way. Without it, one stands at the very real risk of suffering from dental carries, a disease which often causes to tooth extraction (or what we may call tooth amputation, to make it earn the seriousness it deserves).

The second function served by the toothpaste is that of removing food particles from the teeth surface. If you decided to brush your teeth without toothpaste, chances are that you wouldn't be succeeding in removing all food remains - rendering the whole tooth-brushing exercise largely an exercise in vanity. What one needs to remember here is that the food particles, if just left to stay on the teeth surface (or if removed improperly) would start rotting there, causing a lot of harm to the person on whose mouth they would be resident.

The third function served by the toothpaste is that of combating bad mouth odor, in the person who uses it. In the first instance, by properly removing food particles from the teeth, the toothpaste goes a long way in this regard (of combating halitosis). But on yet another note, we notice that most toothpastes tend to have in them some ingredients that are aimed at giving their users fresh breath, thus doing away with halitosis (or at least masking its effects).

The fourth function served by toothpaste is that of directly providing the teeth with the various nutrients they need. Most toothpastes will, for instance, actively give teeth fluoride - an important mineral for the well being of teeth. Many of them nowadays also provide the mouth with a compound known as xylitol; which goes a long way towards the prevention of gum diseases.
