The Fraud Factor

Sally was a smart, capable, educated Middle Manager working in Corporate America, trying to do her best, loyal to her company and kind to her employees. She had done pretty well for herself. She was passionate about her job and had become a leader in her field. By the time I met Sally she was well into her fifties and had a lot to feel good about. She had accomplished a great deal with her work and her life, helping many people along the way.But Sally didn't feel so good. She was exhausted from years of putting up a front. You see, Sally was terrified that one day she would be "found out." In her mind, she just wasn't good enough and she carried around a fear that one day her boss and others in her company would discover that she was a "fraud" and she would be fired from her position. Rational thinking didn't allay her fear. This was deep. It was in her body, in her cells. And she didn't know what to do about it.Sally described that she was tired of carrying around these negative worries and feelings and shared that she considered them a bag of rocks that she hauled around on her back, leaving her tired, worn out and in pain. And she was ready to let them go, once and for all.Unfortunately Sally isn't the only person I've ever met who had the "fraud factor." I used to have this feeling myself. It's actually more common than you might think. About 99% of the clients I've ever worked with over the years have struggled with some level of low self-worth. And oftentimes, because of the self-worth struggle, these same clients end up developing a secret - and very damaging fear - that they are a "fraud" on some level and will be found out. What's really incredible is that every person I've ever known - including myself - had absolutely no reason to feel like a fraud. They were smart and funny, capable and caring - yet they still carried around these deep feelings of fear and shame. I had over 10 years of therapy and I still struggled with these things before I finally discovered the key to letting them go once and for all. And it was a heck of a lot easier than those years of therapy. What I discovered was I was able to let go of the energy of those limiting beliefs and fears and that made all the difference. When I was free from suppressing the old negative feelings, I was able to effectively program some new, positive beliefs about myself. And the same was true for Sally. I helped Sally release the energy of her own negative feelings and taught her how to do it for herself, so that as things arise that don't support her, she can gently release them and keep on moving forward in her life - continuing her good deeds of her work and helping others. So do you feel like a fraud? Are you afraid that you aren't smart enough? Or good enough? How long can you go on carrying around these lies? Think about what it's costing you in terms of your energy level, pain in your body, lost opportunities. I urge you to make a decision to actively release the energy of these feelings. We all are "good enough" just because we are breathing! And this goes for you too. So think about what your life would be like if you were totally comfortable in your own skin and were filled up with positive affirming beliefs and feelings. Wouldn't that be awesome? What could you accomplish? Would life be more fun? Would you be making a bigger difference and helping more people? You bet you would - and more. And it's available to you if you choose this path of self-love. Just ask Sally.Copyright 2009, Molly A. Luffy, MBA.
