The Freeing Power of the Internet
The Net empowers its citizens
The Net empowers its citizens. The Net is a very powerful tool for fighting oppression from the mighty whether their power is legitimate or not. It enables us to join and engage. Mass media isn't one-hundred percent free and we just can't be sure how free it is. Bribery is a big game in strangling the truth.
If the Media is now in a stranglehold again after Gutenberg broke it, The Net is the new tool which can break the stranglehold again.
We can be isolated and yet be able to connect and correspond with the whole world. That is just the situation I'm in -virtually isolated because I don't have anyone worth talking to and the Net might have saved half my sanity. And that makes the Net a healing tool too. It makes us mentally healthy by fighting depression due to isolation. It even makes us happy by connecting us to people dear to us.
What can we expect for the Net's future? New netizens join by the millions everyday. Just imagine the content that adds to the Net database -and worthless contents keep piling up too.
Will there come a time when websites will be forced to filter web content because of its volume? If so, what would be the criteria for filtering and who can be judge as to what to filter? Submission websites are already filtering contents and comments from guests since day one.
Quotes:
Robert Wright theorizes that the point of (online) evolution is to create a species with the social and technological intelligence to weave itself "into a giant, loosely organized planetary brain. '
"A massive increase in the frequency and diversity of communication, which is giving rise to an unprecedented time of creativity, collaboration and conflict. As cultures become increasingly entangled, a new social order will emerge, which has the potential to be the first massively scaled culture to value consent over exploitation - an event unlike anything seen in human history." - Justin Kistner
The web may be better at imparting facts, but books are better at imparting knowledge to interpret those facts. The Internet produces "better conversationalists," David Brooks writes, while books produce "better students."
Is the Net good for us?
All technology is either good or evil according to how we use it. We either control it or let it control us. We drive, use our mobile phone, and multitask at the same time and we get into accidents -some, fatal ones. We get addicted to social networking or online gaming and we become victims of crimes. We become sick with cyberstress. Internet addiction is now a fact and some addicts were even deluded into committing murder.
We control technology and it turns into an excellent tool. We can help a lot of people by sharing our knowledge. We prevent crime and save lives. We can fight oppression and exploitation with it. We might even save the world with it someday. Technology is a very potent but dangerous tool. It's up to us if we let it save us or make us immoral. stupid.
