Most people from Catholic community follow Catholic funeral etiquette diligently. Below mentioned are important aspects of the Catholic funeral ceremony , which is followed by everyone who attends the funeral ceremony.
Condolence visits Its important to pay a visit to the family of deceased to express your sympathy and offer your help. Its also important to get foods to the family of demised person as most of them will be hungry after wake & do not want to cook. Some will also get pastries to eat on the morning of funeral. During visits to these places its appropriate to offer sympathy in right sense. The choice of words plays an important role during this time, as one wouldnt want to overdo it.
Flowers - Sending flowers is the most conventional way to expressing condolence. Most would send flowers to funeral home, to the church, or to the deceaseds familys home with bereavement cards. This actually makes it easier for the people sending condolences in appropriate manner & some families prefer donations in place of sending flowers.
The Wake This takes place before the actual funeral service & usually organized in evenings. People who cannot make it to the funeral attend the Wake support the deceaseds family. Wake may be held at someones place as well.
There are many aspects of Catholic funeral etiquette besides above mentioned aspects, such as the funeral, place to sit, dress code, being a Pallbearer & few more. Funeral service can be public or private affair, at the discretion of the family of the demised person. Many prefer to have a private burial ceremony as they would want to have only the closed ones to attend the funeral ceremony. Hence people attend funeral ceremonies unless it conveyed as a private burial ceremony.
