The Future Of Health Care In The United States

Since the end of World War II, the United States of America has played a key role in the affairs of the entire world

. It has helped most, if not all, the major conflicts within modern history. From its culture to its politics, many have attributed the success of the United States to its acceptance and fair treatment of the different races which have formed its unique society.

Being the last remaining superpower in the world, it retains the most technologically advanced military power allowing dominance in any conflict. It also boasts the most widely accepted currency throughout the entire world market. It is the benchmark for different democracies that look to the United States for guidance and assistance. Being the most powerful country, one would expect that they would have the most comprehensive programs to maintain and cultivate the population which strengthens it, but that is not necessarily the case.

There are programs which many consider lacking, such as healthcare. Healthcare in the United States is so expensive that is has given rise to the term Medical Tourism. Medical Tourism is the act of travelling to a different country to get medical operations performed. Healthcare is so financially impractical that people are still saving money having medical procedures done across borders.

Legislators have long known about this problem, but have prioritized other points, until the recent administration, which is trying to provide universal healthcare at affordable prices. Progress is slowly being made in making healthcare more financially feasible. A recent federal statute that was passed is the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act or PPACA. This statute reforms laws which govern the private health insurance market, provide better coverage for pre-existing conditions, increase assistance for drug prescriptions, and extending the life of the Medicare program for an additional 12 years. The statute is designed to slowly put in effect the reforms in a staggered manner.

Another development on the road to universal healthcare is the Healthcare and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010 which is divided into two parts: one enacting reforms on the Healthcare Bill and the other enacting reforms on Student Loan policies. This act introduces some changes to a previous statute, the PPACA, which extends tax credits to purchase insurance plans among other things.

The improvements which are slowly changing the policies which govern and address the problem of healthcare in the United States is an indication of the general direction where legislators are headed. The Obama Administration is facing serious opposition from different parties including most Republicans and even private insurance companies, but is plodding along.

From what we can see from the progress during these past few years, we can surmise that the future of healthcare may have a positive but still uncertain outlook. We can only hope that the administrations that will eventually replace the current administration will affect even greater changes so that the people of the United States of America are better protected from financial ruin due to medical conditions.
