The Genius Of Prometheus

Prometheus is a really great science fiction film

, one of the best to come out in a long time in my opinion. Of course there will be those who do not see it this way, and will nitpick the film to death over small things like undeveloped ideas, bad dialogue, or whatever else. But none of these things bothered me because of the great mysteries the film presents to the audience. Any film that can get people talking about it for hours afterward and still leave them amazed and waiting for the sequel is a winner in my book. So read on to delve into the mysteries of Prometheus. There will be spoilers in this article.

The first mystery revolves around the opening scene, where a single engineer drinks a substance and they dissolves into the water on a barren planet as a spacecraft flies away. His DNA is seen mixing with cells that began to split. The idea here is that this is their way of seeding the planet with life. Most people believe that this planet is Earth. But the question remains, did this create all life on Earth, or just human life. There is no plant or animal life visible on the planet so it could be that they seeded everything, but that would mean that they either knew or simply hoped that humans would evolve eventually. This begs the question, did they know exactly that humans would evolve or were they just waiting and seeing what they ended up with.

The next great mystery is why the aliens would come and tell us where to find them if they simply intended to either destroy us or to use us as hosts for their weapons. Was the plan to send the ships down to infect us all along, or did we mess up at some point which triggered this response. This leads into the whole Christian mythos aspect of the film. The date of the attack on the engineers was around 2000 years ago, when they were planning on destroying our planet or whatever. Also, the events of the movie take place on Christmas as well. This begs the question of whether the attack was prompted by the death of Christ (was he an engineer?) the rise of Christianity, or was this simply a coincidence.

The final mystery that I will cover is the room which housed the jars of the black goo along with a large stone head statue and murals on the wall. This room presents many questions. First of all, the engineers were fleeing to it when the outbreak happened. This is likely because the room keeps the substance at bay and preserves life. But the engineer who made it to the room were no longer in there so they must have escaped to somewhere. It is also clear from the alien sculpture that the engineers revered and worshiped the aliens, which may be why they want to create them in the first place.
