The night was only just beginning and Eddie held out high hopes to score with one

of the little darlings from the sweet factory and had said so to grouchy Dave behind the bar who snorted disbelievingly. Eddie didnt care, he was feeling full of himself, so much so that when a half dozen of the factory girls did eventually come giggling through the door, in a cloud of hairspray and Woolworths perfume, he confidently picked one out for himself straight away.

Eddie was surprised to find the girl not interested; he wasnt used to being snubbed when he offered a girl a drink. Usually his disarming, mischievous smile and sharp clothes served him well. Eddie had done himself proud with the latest blue, suede shoes and co-ordinated, narrow lapelled jacket. But the girls all had their orange juices at hand and their eyes pouring over a catalogue of wedding accessories. Now on the page of pearl wedding jewellery the quiet one that he had his eye on became very serious as she stated Someone who bought you pearls must really love you. The others all laughed at this. Oh Pearl they all said in unison and her face crinkled into a smile.

Eddie stood on the edge of this group being ignored. As he watched her he felt a little miffed that the girl he had chosen, the special one that stood out in the group, who would probably, he realised as he watched her, stand out in any group, didnt even notice him. He missed the glance she gave him as he turned to walk back to the bar where a sweetly rounded young barmaid was now pulling pints. Eddie chatted to her but as the night passed, he found himself looking in the mirror behind the bar at Pearls innocent, glowing face, smiling that strangely unsettling smile.

Eddie was no longer in the mood for that kind of night so Doris, the barmaid, was surprised when he courteously left her at her doorway and with a grin called out catch you later babe. She was even too surprised to be hurt until it was too late to shout out to him. He was walking fast in the direction of the canal. Hed heard in the snatches of conversation coming from the girls table that she of the pearl wedding jewellery , he must really love you, remark, lived in one of the new blocks overlooking the canal and for the next few weeks he walked the towpath in hope of a glimpse of her. Once he thought he had seen her and felt his heart lift until he realised he was mistaken.

When at last she came bouncing down the stairs and ran straight into him sloping along with his head down, he wasnt prepared and all his smooth words disappeared down his throat like washing up water down a drain. Oh gosh, she said I am sorry. Then Oh hello its you. Apparently she had often seen him walking past her flat and wondered where he was going. You always look like youre dressed up to go somewhere. Suddenly he found his voice and asked her to join him in a walk down the towpath and then later to a dance and a few weeks later, if she would marry him and as she said yes, he then had to save up to buy some of that Pearl wedding jewellery for her to wear on the day just to prove that he really, really did love her.
