The Golf Grip: What A Little Bug Spray Can Teach You

In this article, we are going to talk about the golf grip. We are not going to talk about particular grip styles. Rather, we are going to talk about golf grip philosophy. Specifically, we'll review what a little lotion on your hands can teach you about the golf grip.

Last week, I went out for a round of golf. After checking several discount golf tee times, we found a tremendous discount tee time at a great course and we were all very excited for the round. It was one of those days where the humidity had taken over and made way for bugs, lots of them. On this day in particular, the mosquitoes all decided that it was time to take over the golf course. The mosquitoes were so bad that we saw many people leaving the course. In fact, the group ahead of us left the course and freed us up to play a quicker round.

We did not need to leave the golf course because, fortunately, one of my playing partners had a bottle of the bug spray "Off". So, on the fifth hole, each of us put a lot of "Off" on and we continued playing in spite of the harem of mosquitoes in our midst.

For the first five holes, my driving of the golf ball had been horrendous. Like usual, I was driving the golf ball far but it was not going straight. I was driving the ball left and right, but finding the fairway was like finding the proverbial needle in the haystack. Like Tiger Woods often says, "I had a two-way miss." Granted, Tiger Woods is a better than par golfer, but I am on my way.

Then, on that fifth hole, I applied the bug spray all over to keep the annoying mosquitoes at bay. Mosquitoes are enormously bothersome and one would never think of being grateful for mosquitoes, but on this day, I was. Let me tell you why.

Just like after you apply sun tan lotion, your hands are all greasy and slippery after you put on mosquito repellent. So, as I approached the sixth hole, a long par 4, my primary concern was not having the club fly out of my hands and into the face of one of my golfing buddies.

As I gripped the club, I realized that my golf grip was too tight. With all of the mosquito repellent on my hand, the tight grip actually made the club more slippery in my hand. The tighter I gripped the club, the more I felt like it would fly out of my hand. So, I loosened my grip a little bit but interlocked it more. And, to keep the club from flying out of my hand, I swang the golf club slower and with much more control.

The result? I hit the longest drive of the day straight down the fairway.

We often hear in golf lessons to grip the golf club light and rather gently, like you would hold an egg that you do not want to crack. We also hear to swing in control, rather than lashing at the ball to get distance. And, even when we think we are following this advice, we are still not. The grip is too tight and the swing is not in control.

On this day, I was forced into using the exact proper golf grip by, of all things, mosquitos. So, if you are trying to find a better golf grip and swing, try putting a little lotion on your hands. It might just be the perfect ointment for your ailing golf grip.
