The Good And Bad Of Plastic Surgeries
Plastic surgeries have received a lot of media attention in recent years
, for both positive and negative reasons. The world has become polarized on the topic of these operations, and everyone seems to have a strong opinion on it.
The basic arguments for and against the operations are thus: Don't mess with Mother Nature or Why not fix what's broken. People have very strong viewpoints on this issue and will happily express them no matter which side of the fence you happen to be on.
The simple fact of it is-there is a lot of stigma attached to many instances of plastic surgery. Deciding to get such a surgery for cosmetic reasons has been lampooned in the press, in politics and in many other areas of our society because people who opt to change their appearance are routinely labeled as self-involved, self-indulgent or shallow.
On the other hand, there is also a stigma attached to certain physical features that plastic surgery can easily correct. For example, most people have preconceived notions about those with hooked noses, receding chins, excess fat or flat chests.
Many physical features cannot be changed through behavioral modification and must be changed through surgery or accepted as a lifelong attribute. If you find yourself struggling with one of your natural characteristics and wish to change it to avoid the perceptions of other people, but don't wish to deal with the new perceptions they'll have when you've undergone these surgeries, you're in a pickle.
What many people fail to recognize about plastic surgeries is that they were designed for reconstructive purposes and continue to be used for that reason in large numbers today. People born with birth defects or maimed in accidents benefit greatly from them, and no one is criticizing them for changing their bodies.
It seems to be that if you're fixing what is perceived to be a mistake on the part of mother nature or fate, there's no problem. However, if you're changing something because you feel you would look or feel better because of that change, you risk being labeled a shallow, selfish money-waster.
The argument over plastic surgeries is not likely to end any time soon, so the best advice one can give to do what feels right to you and try to ignore the criticism and judgment of those that don't agree with your choice. You'll be happy you did.
