The Good Kind of Veneer

The old saying "nobody's perfect" is considered by many people as a clich. Yet clichs continue to persist and continue to be said, time and again, precisely because they contain some truth to it. Even celebrities, blessed though they may seem to be when it comes to the genetic lottery, have imperfections. They just hide it better than ordinary folk because of their entourage battalion on call to mask whatever physical flaw they have. Chances are even that celebrity whose perfect bright smile can rival the bright lights of Hollywood are courtesy of cosmetic teeth veneers by a skilled cosmetic dentist.

Ordinary mortals have to contend with stained and crooked teeth. Other dental problems include having spaces or gaps, medically known as diastimas, chipping, and wearing out of the teeth either because of incessant grinding or by drinking too much carbonated drinks. The most common treatment dentists usually resort to is cosmetic teeth veneers.

Dental veneers are thin shells made out of materials like porcelain, ceramic, and composite resin. These materials are specifically used due to their close resemblance to the look and feel of the human tooth. The dentist then "bonds" the veneers to the teeth's front surface to improve the overall appearance of the patient's smile.

Before the dentist starts to work on your veneers he would have to prepare your teeth first. The first step involves reshaping the front surface of the teeth by shaving off a portion of the enamel to make way for the veneers. The dentist would then make an impression of your teeth which would serve as the design guide for your veneers. The design process can take some time though so your dentist may provide you with temporary veneers during the wait. Once the veneers are fitted, further adjustments are made on it before it is cleaned and roughened to prepare for the dental cement. The veneers are then bonded into place with dental cement.

The durability of veneers depends on the material used by the dentist. Porcelain veneers are more long-lasting compared to the ones made out of composite resin, though they are more inexpensive because of that. With proper oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups, you can be assured that your veneers can last for a long time.
