The Good and the bad side of metal roof

Having a metal roof is not common in the rural areas. Some of the locals utilize the native way of roofing with the use of leaves from a specific tree which is abundant in their place. This kind of roofing is a little cheaper compared to metal roofing but the question of durability can be argued. On the other hand, the benefits of having a metal roof can be very significant in term of durability. Metal roof can endure harsh conditions and last longer than native raw material. A lot houses and infrastructures constructed with modern engineering suggest the use of metal roof as possible.

Advantage of metal roof

The ample advantages of metal roof have made it as the preferred roofing material for buildings and houses. Metal roof is lightweight, strong, fire and hail resistant making it the preferred roofing material in some places that snows. The number of construction workers can be minimized since metal roof can be easily installed with minimal work force making it labor efficient. Painting metal roof can also be an easy task because premixed roof paint with added metal protection against rust and wearing down are now available in the market. Another advantage of metal roofs is the design that can be done on the roof. Metal roofs are flexible in terms of designs, customizing different roof patterns can be done to add style to the house. Lastly, I believe the most significant advantage of a metal roof is that it is recyclable. Its recyclability makes it good for the environment. A metal roof can be recycled into just about anything and can be re used over and over until it rust down.

Metal roof Disadvantages

The most glaring disadvantage of a metal roof is the fact that it is made of metal. The properties of metals have its downside. One of which is it allows heat to be absorbed and retained. This means that metal roofing can actually make the house hotter. This is a big problem especially in tropical countries. In order to avoid this, anti-heat materials must be used in the ceilings to isolate the interior of the house from the heat. Or there must be coatings used as an anti-heat protector for prevention of too much heat absorption. Another way to avoid this is to design a house specifically with a high ceiling which reduces the heat radiated from the roof. What makes this problematic is it requires higher cost that some people might not be able to afford this. Another disadvantage is that a high grade metal roof is expensive. Good quality metals are costly for some, which may lead them to buy a cheap, low quality metal roof. A low quality metal roof has more disadvantages since not only is it corrosive, but can also be potentially dangerous when it wears down and making its fragile. Lastly, when metal roof oxidizes with oxygen, it creates rust which could possibly injure and cause tetanus. Safety issues is high when metal roof is used in construction.
