The Govt. of India is executing a movement to conserve the tigers

Tiger is a charismatic creature having an essential responsibility in the safeguarding of the ecosystem . It is at the summit of the food chain, a top hunter that keeps the balance of population in the wild .

Occurrence of tiger in the jungle suggests the health of the forest . If the tigers become extinct, the whole ecosystem will give away . If tiger goes extinct, few more species can or will go extinct. Like after Dodos went extinct in Mauritius, a species of Acacia tree too turned extinct.

Three sub species of tiger have already become extinct . Almost ninety five % of tiger population has been destroyed during the preceding century .

At this moment the overall world count of tigers in the wild is around 3500 with around 1411 tigers in India. Defending a single tiger is equivalent to saving 100 SQ KM of flora and fauna territory . However, the tiger count in India is questioned by professionals for its accurateness as several judge that the tiger population is much smaller than the census number .

Poaching is the most important cause for this. Poisoned goat as a bait is the often used mode . Recently in an happening at Ranthambhore national park, a common vacation spot for vacationers , Aldrin - a strong pesticide was employed to exterminate two 15-18 months old tiger cubs .

In an another effort, to reduce killing of tigers , the Indian govt. has recently opened a dialogue with the Chinese govt. to go with India for its attempt to monitor and blockade the smuggler's/ poacher's routes. In December 2009, China imprisoned the person who had killed a rare tiger for 12 years and also fined him approximately 85,000 U.S. dollars.

With the aggressive promotion of the Indian govt., it is now easy to glimpse hoardings , signage's asking citizens to enhance their awareness and consequently aid the Indian govt. in its goal .
