The Greatest Ever World Cup Games

The World Cup is the greatest sporting show on earth

. Every four years the world comes to a standstill to watch it. This is the case regardless if your country is competing in it. Since it began in 1930 there have been some fantastic matches. Which though are the greatest World Cup games of all time?

To be included for consideration it has to fulfill a variety of factors. There needs to be drama, tension and twists and turns. There need to be goals and goals of a world class nature. By the end of it all you need to be slumped in a chair needing a rest from what you've just seen.

One game which is universally regarded as one of the best World Cup games of all time is the 1982 classic between Italy and Brazil. Both sides were laden with superstars and for Brazil it was a great chance to break out of the slump since Pele retired in 1970. Brazil only needed to draw the game to advance but Italy were relentless. Paolo Rossi scored a hat trick as Italy were on their way to winning a memorable World Cup.

Because Brazil are who they are, whenever they play there is a sense of buzz and excitement. This is considerably the case when they are playing another big side. This was the case in 1986 when they met France in the quarter-final. The game had everything - a penalty missed by Michel Platini on his birthday, another shout for a French penalty being waved away and Socrates missing an open goal. In the end France won by penalty shoot-out to reach the final four.

Sometimes the World Cup is great because of the upsets it throws up. Often Goliath slays David but there are a few times when David gets up and when it happen it is truly memorable. The opening game of the 19990 World Cup saw defending champions Argentina take on Cameroon. Even some 20 years later it seems impossible to believe that this team of part-timers would be able to take on the might of Argentina and Maradona and actually win.

England and Germany have played some World Cup classics. The final in 1966 is obviously regarded in England as they greatest game ever played. The two titans through everything at each other and the game finished 2-2 after regulation time. In extra-time Geoff Hurst scored a goal which today people still argue if it actually was a goal. He then added another to seal the win.

In 1990, the two met in the semi-final. With a place in the World Cup final on the line, it was a massive game. Even more so than usual. It was very tight with nothing splitting the teams after 120 minutes. It went to penalties where Germany held their nerve better. Chris Waddle and Stuart Pearce were the ones who infamously missed for England. Germany would then go on to win the World Cup while England were left to ponder what may have been.
