The Greatest Regions On The Planet For Whale Watching
One of the things on many people's "bucket list" is to whale watch and see some of these gentle
, magnificent creatures in their natural habitats. It's hard to really picture the sheer magnitude of their size or grasp the dynamics of the pod from video documentaries. Some things in life you just have to experience for yourself. While there are many places around the world to visit during whale watching season, you have to be careful that you're not choosing an exploitative enterprise that will take you on a "whale chase," more than a watch. It's best to stay at least 300 feet from the pod and view from binoculars or let them come to you; but many operators, in their rush to provide the biggest thrill, take tourists on a sea-sickening journey that will threaten the psyche of the whales, not to mention the contents of your stomach!
Azores, an out of the way Portuguese chain of islands in the Atlantic Ocean, is one of the best places to whale watch in Europe. In the summertime, you should be able to observe sperm whales and short-finned pilot whales, but the best time is from February through June, when you can see killer, humpback, fin, blue and sei whales, along with a few different types of dolphins. On the other hand, in the wintertime (November through January) there is little opportunity to see anything.
The backdrop for Moby Dick was none other than America's own Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The truth is, in the whaling industry's peak, this Northeastern port was a happening place. Now the whale watch industry has picked up where whalers left off, carrying visitors by boat to view minke, pilot, right and humpback whales, dolphins and sea turtles. If you're lucky, if it's April, you can catch a glimpse of the northern right whale, which is the most rare whale species in the world. Since the currents push down food from Nova Scotia, whales like to feed off the coasts of Barnstable, Boston, Provincetown or Plymouth. May through October is typically the perfect time frame to go.
Dominica, one of the Caribbean islands, is famous for its colorful coral reefs, underwater hot springs, and strikingly attractive aquatic life. Tourists visiting Christopher Columbus's paradise in the Lesser Antilles will enjoy rainforest nature hikes and viewing many of the rarest animals, birds and plants throughout the world. Dominica is said to be the only country in the world where sperm whales reside all year long. From time to time there are whale watch possibilities, and you'll see migrations, feeding and breeding activity of dwarf and pygmy sperm whales, in addition to humpback, Bryde's and killer whales, Risso's dolphins, spinner dolphins, common dolphins, Atlantic spotted dolphins and giant sea turtles. While travelers are almost certain to see something at any time of year, November to April feature the most diverse sightings and the winter is when you will see the best acrobatics when the sperm and humpback whales mate.
No mention of the top whale watch spots would be complete without mentioning the southern tip of Africa. Hermanus and Cape Town offer some of the best land-viewing opportunities for the southern right, killer, Bryde and humpback whale varieties, as well as dusky and bottlenose dolphins and African penguins. In Hermanus, you'll want to visit Walker Bay from May to October. In Cape Town, you're best off visiting False Bay from mid-August to mid-October. You can have a magical view driving down the Muizenberg above St. James and Kalk Bay or taking the coastal road from Simon's Town to Cape Point.
