San Francisco airport can be said as one and only airport concerned about the environment

. The airport management has showed its unease and apprehensions about the increasing greenhouse gases emissions as we continue to grow technically. Carbon footprints are the total set of greenhouse gases emitted by an organization, a person or during an event. These footprints can be measured by the GHG assessments. When one knows the size of one"s carbon footprint, a counter strategy to effectively reduce the GHG effect can be developed. Airport San Francisco or SFO has come up with carbon offset system on the same lines.

As per the statistics, a jet plane emits more than one pound of CO2 every mile per passenger and by the time, the plane is over 1300 miles, the carbon prints are more than one ton per mile/ passenger. A round trip taken by a plane from New York to LA would amount to 6,000 miles and 5 tons of CO2 per mile for every passenger. Similarly, Rome to NY would be 9,000 miles in a round trip and 7 tons of CO2. Given the fact that San Francisco airport is the largest airport in the bay area of San Francisco and the second busiest airport of California, it is but obvious that the carbon prints of SFO are much more and they have had to take immediate action to reconcile the negative effects of gases on environment.

The airport has understood its responsibility towards the environment. It has developed carbon offset system to reduce the carbon footprint and the damage done to environment by the greenhouse gases. The kiosks at San Francisco airport are named as Climate Passport Kiosks. These kiosks sell offsets. One can buy the carbon offsets and reduce one"s personal footprints to counterbalance the negative effect of gases one may have produced in order to travel. This service is completely voluntary.

If one"s interested in buying carbon offset, one has to enter flight details and the kiosk will calculate the amount of carbon offset in pound. SFO is the first airport to initiate this green service with these climate kiosks; for the sake and hope of living in better environment and technology oriented world, let"s hope that other airports such as Miami airport and others follow soon.
