The Growing Immigrant Movement And Communications

Many articles and even books have been written about the indestructible nature of a true friendship

. It is unquestionably that nothing can destroy it, but it is also true that the lack of frequent communication cools it down since there is no current knowledge of those little everyday things that give us sorrow or joy.

We are fortunate to have the advantages of the Internet and its enormous potential, such as Chats, social networks and many others. Despite of this, I think nothing can replace the casual and spontaneous or even unexpected verbal communication provided by the telephone and its great advantages in mobility and availability.

Who doesnt feel great joy when receiving a call from a friend or family member to tell us even just a small goal he just achieved? Or good news received from the doctor? A possible promotion? Many apparent insignificant things you want to share and enjoy together with the loved one who is close to your heart but physically distant.

How often, while being away and regardless of its nature, do we fervently wish to share with our loved ones, small things that has just taken place, and wish we could talk to them to hear their views, comments, words of encouragement or even sympathy?.

I believe anyone who has left his country being already an adult -and still resides outside of it-, when returning home for vacations or family visit, has experienced something similar to what I am about to describe. The first encounters are fraught with great emotion and the subject of conversation tends to be referring each other new things that have happened, interesting topics that have taken place, details about living on each side, new things in general. Then, we agree to meet as frequently and extended as we met before. During those meetings, we start to realize that those themes of the past are rapidly extinguishing and that there is big gap between the things we have in common. Many of the things Im told, I dont longer care about and many of the things I tell are no longer of their interest. Clearly, friendship is about enjoying and sharing things in common and the new things that we have to tell, hardly accomplish that.

I have mentioned here how lucky we are to live in this era in which thanks to telecommunications -supported by satellites, internet, cell phones, and other technological advances- our live is easier, allowing us to reduce the distances and increase our ability to be emotionally close even when the geographical distance is big.

Another characteristic of our time is the huge mobility and ease of movement by individuals as well as families. It is estimated that by the end of the 20th century, the number of families that voluntarily resided outside their country of origin, exceeded the 25 million and that this number will increase at a rate of 4% every year. These figures do not include forced displacement caused by wars or natural disasters.

For all those reasons, telecommunications will remain at an important level in our lives, reinforcing in our benefit the Voice to Voice element and creating more alternatives that are at a more competitive price and reachable to a growing number of people.
