The Growing Need For Geriatric Care

The aging issues and special needs of older adult call for registered nurses with

expertise in geriatric care and its related disorders that strike many older adults that need specialized care of clinical professionals that are trained to care for this particular age group. Many nursing schools/colleges are producing such professionals for the treatment.

The demand for nurses specializing in geriatric care is accelerating globally along with the nations changing demographics. We have to take note of those baby boomers approaching their retirement years, the number of which belongs to age 55 and older will soar from 60 million (21 percent of the population) to more than 107 million (31 percent) by 2030, this figure was based on figures provided by the National Council on Aging in Washington, D.C.

The professional registered nurses working with older adults every day in all health care settings need not only have to be an expert in their nursing specialty like critical care, oncology, primary care, home care, hospice, palliative care and so on but in particular on the health needs of older adults. For example, Bay area nursing programs have been emphasizing on educating more nurses about normal age related as well as the abnormal changes that are taking place in the twilight stage of the elderly. Specialized knowledge on the dimensions of wellness and skills will help them apply a holistic approach and coordinate care across the life span of the geriatric clients.

Encouraging older adults to perform these tasks no matter how slow requires patience on the part of the nurse and family members. Family support becomes a significant contribution for the success and sustainability of care.

The challenge for nurses trained by vocational nursing program will be to meet the growing demand for ambulatory, community-based and home care to better support frail older adults. In this regard, psychiatric technician program for nurses can play a major role in health promotion and rehabilitation of older adults who are caught in the threshold of this stage of life. As older adults become homebound, insurmountable complications arise so the challenge becomes even greater. This challenge is global and becoming more evident as we face the new millennium. Many world class nursing colleges / schools are working to fight with the coming challenges.
