The Hazards Of Loud Music

According to the philosophy of a famous reggae artist and hordes of other wailers

, music is best enjoyed when played at volumes loud enough to disturb the neighbors. The need for proximity to the source of music for some dance music fans is so great that some even sleep inside speaker boxes. The price one pays for this extravagance goes beyond disturbing the peace of the community.

Neighbors' complaints don't do any good for people who pride themselves in listening their way to deafness. The responsibility of law enforcers is to protect the peace, not one's personal auditory ability. All parties, whether player or victim, suffer hearing loss consequences, lasting from a few hours to permanent damage. Then, there is the truly unfortunate situation that turns into permanent hearing loss, as there are no public education campaigns that would increase awareness of these dangers.

In my opinion, a greater effort must be made to educate the public. There are radio shows that sporadically mention this issue. This year has been rather slow for the cause, what with the depressed economy. Music can be played at higher volumes nowadays with the aid of digital technology, which some have pinpointed as a contributing factor for hearing loss.

Anyone who has gone to a nightclub, as more and more are doing, knows the consequences in terms of hearing loss. No local studies have been conducted regarding the news promoted in campaigns in Britain, Canada and the US that sounds at or above 85 decibels are dangerous. Two out of three youths go to clubs on a regular basis, and of them three out of four of them experience tinnitus afterward, according to a study by the Royal National Institute for the Deaf in Britain and as reported by the Guardian, a British newspaper.

That ringing is the final step before damage is known by less than half, and that this damage is irreparable is known by only two out of five. Most are given 24 hours for the ringing to subside, but stubborn clubbers with repeated exposure can suffer permanent ringing or even deafness. Fortunately, the group has launched the "Don't Lose the Music" program to educate clubbers and music lovers about these risks.

The US and Canada have launched similar programs. The American Tinnitus Association both studies and advocates against loud music in the US. In Canada, there are similar programs. Local experts attest that many young people seek consultation for hearing loss related to loud music. In order to determine the number of hearing loss cases caused by loud music, groups must first study causation.
