The Healing Power of Meditation Music
Have you ever stopped to wonder why it is that we humans are so fond of listening to music
?
Think about it for a moment...what is the fundamental reason why we listen to music at all?
In the broadest sense, the reason we enjoy listening to music is because it is mood altering. When we listen to music, the most immediate effects we experience take place on an emotional level. Music can be extremely powerful in this regard. In fact, anything that makes a sound can have a sudden and profound effect on us.
For example, have you ever been so touched by a beautiful piece of music that you cried? Have you ever cringed at the sound of fingernails being dragged down a chalkboard? Most people can truthfully answer "yes" to both of these questions.
When you reach for your favourite CD or turn on the radio, in effect, what you are saying with your action is, "I wish to adjust the way I feel".
Music is everywhere. In this modern day and age we are surrounded by it. At home, in the car, at your local shopping center, on the TV. We are in love with music! All this just goes to show how much we are emotional beings. We love to be stimulated. We love to express ourselves. We love to feel.
But what if the feelings you are experiencing are unpleasant? What if you are feeling stressed, tired or depressed? What if you are feeling frustrated or angry? What if you are unwell?
Taking time out to listen to some soothing meditation music might seem like a simplistic solution to these kinds of problems, but the fact is, it is often a very effective solution indeed! When you listen to meditation music, or any form of slow, relaxing music, your emotional state will slowly attune to the soothing sounds, leading to feelings of relaxation and peace of mind.
Now the thing about your emotions is that they strongly influence the functioning of your physical body and of your mind. So as your feelings of relaxation begin to expand and deepen, you may begin to notice other positive effects. Your breathing begins to slow down and deepen, leading to an increase in oxygen supply to your muscles and organs. Your heart rate slows down and your blood pressure stabilizes. Muscle tension subsides and your body's production of stress related hormones, like cortisol for example, begins to decrease.
Not only does this lead to a happier and more stress free you, it may also lead to an improvement in the functioning of your immune system and enhanced recovery from strenuous activity or injury.
Who would have thought that just by listening to music, one can experience so many benefits on so many levels! Obviously, not all types of music lead to these kinds of benefits, which is why it is so important that you listen to relaxing meditation music if you wish to become happier, healthier and more relaxed. After all, music can stimulate or sooth you. It can relieve stress and it can induce stress. It can elevate you or depress you. It can open your heart, or it can enrage you. Once you appreciate how powerful music can be, and how much of an effect it can have on your emotions, your mind and your body, you can really use this knowledge to your advantage. Take some time out (and when I say "time out" I mean really stop what you are doing, lie back and listen closely) to some relaxing meditation music and try it for yourself.
