When you think of life in a big city, what are some of the words that first come to mind

No, this last word - healthy - or even any related word is one that probably doesn't come to mind when you think of living in a city and there's a good chance you'd actually think of the opposite first and foremost.

However, whilst city living can be unhealthy and there are plenty of people who do live an unnecessarily unhealthy lifestyle, the truth is that if you live in one of the major cities around the world, you can actually lead a healthier lifestyle easier than people who live elsewhere.

And exercise is the primary example of one of the key health benefits of living in a big city.

Look at gyms around the UK. Chances are wherever you're located in country, with the exception of if you live in a particularly rural area, there'll be a gym within a five or 10 minute drive from your home.

Easy and convenient, the downside comes when you take a look at its opening time, which is likely to be around 7am to 9pm.

Open for 14 hours a day, they're going to cater for a wide part of the market, but aren't going to be open when those people who are working late or starting early want to work out.

Head to London, however and it would be almost impossible to find a gym in London that wasn't opened when you wanted to go, whether it was 6am or 11pm. Yes, it might not be the gym closest to your home, but there'll be a gym in London open somewhere that you'll be to utilize irrelevant of the time of day.

And then there's the diet of a city resident.

Full of ready meals, pre-packed sandwiches and cafe bought snacks?

Well, it can be - or you can opt for the much healthier alternative by just planning what you're going to eat throughout the week.

Ditching the shop bought muffin for a bowl of cereal, the pre-packed sandwich for a homemade one and the ready meal for a quick and simple pasta dish, you'll be surprised at not only how much weight you can lose when planning your diet, but also how much money you could save.

There's a common misconception about living in the city where most people - often largely by those who live there - think that it's difficult to maintain any type of healthy lifestyle. The truth is that yes, if you're living in the city you're likely to seem busier than others and so it's not necessarily as straightforward, but if you take the time out to plan and prepare and understand just what services are available to you, city living can in fact by a particularly healthy option.
