A team of scientists at the Boston School of Medicine have identified a heart-brain
connection that may influence the rate at which the brain ages.
Brain atrophy is a natural processing of aging. As people age, the brain begins to shrink, but according to the team at the Boston School of Medicine, this aging may not be limited to the elderly. According to their study, brain atrophy was also seen in younger people in their thirties who did not suffer from any heart disease, but were noted to have a low cardiac index. Low cardiac index is a measure that indicates how much blood the heart pumps out relative to body size.1
Out of the 1500 people who were studied, almost one-third showed low cardiac index. Scientists were able to associate low cardiac index with smaller brain volume. Leading researcher, Dr. Angela Jefferson said, "It is too early to dole out health advice based on this one finding but it does suggest that heart and brain health go hand in hand."
One possible theory could be that lower pumping volume of blood by the heart would mean less blood flow to the brain. Since blood carries oxygen and essential nutrients, a deficient blood flow to the brain may result in reduced brain volume and accelerated neuro-degeneration.
