The Hidden Side of Madrid

The Hidden Side of Madrid

Every city is a labyrinth. In some forgotten corner or behind an unmarked door, there are always treasures that we stumble upon by accident or through the sage advice of a friend. Madrid, one of the most vibrant cities on the planet, has spots that are by turns unusual, intimate and provocative, yet which are ignored by most tour guides. On your next trip to Madrid, it might be worth a visit to these places, to get a truly authentic idea of what life in the city is really like.

For instance, do you know what the Madrid skyline looks like? There are three recommended vantage points from which to fully appreciate the varied urban landscape of Madrid. When evening falls, there is nothing better than to climb to the top of the Debod Egyptian Temple and photograph the city bathed in golden light, with the Royal Palace and the Almudena Cathedral as the star attractions. For another view, not as full, but just as wondrous, you can visit the Terrace of Fine Arts Circle, open to the public during specific hours. However, if it is the rural that intrigues you, visit To Po Hill or Garabitas Hill in the Casa de Campo.

Many regular tourists might have already visited the Prado National Museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum or the Queen Sofia Museum, but in Madrid, you will find hundreds of less famous but extremely interesting, specialized museums. The Old Coal Mine Museum, for example, offers you a visit to a mine right in the heart of Madrid. Alternatively, the Museum of Medical and Forensic Anthropology, Palaeontology and Criminology takes you on a spine-chilling tour of murder weapons and criminal evidence, or you can visit the city's Wax Museum for a heart-pounding ride on the Train of Terror. For those travelling with children, the unique Perez Mouse Museum offers an option aimed directly at them.

In a corner of the Argelles District, a house overflowing with flowerpots might surprise passers-by. It's the "House of Flowers," the former dwelling of the famous Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda, a hugely influential figure in both the world of poetry and politics.

The gigantic Pleasant Retreat Park hides secrets, as well. The Cecilio Rodrguez Gardens offer a peaceful haven amongst ponds, perfectly-groomed cypresses, and pergolas.

But how do you discover the secret corners of Madrid? Well, there are many alternatives, from booking a themed tour, reading blogs about the city or asking the concierge in one of the hotels in Madrid (who are usually great sources of information). Alternatively, simply lose yourself amidst the streets in search of treasure, guided by nothing more than your own intuition.
