The Highland Lakes Air Force Museum

In the heart of the hill country lays an amazing collection of history; World War II aircrafts

. Located in Burnet, Texas is the Highland Lakes Squadron Commemorative Air Force which is home to many World War II aircrafts as well as a museum and Vietnam memorial garden. Visiting the museum would be a special treat for the entire family and a one of a kind up close and personal look at aviation history.

The history of the museum begins in April of 1992 when the Highland Lakes Squadron was chartered by Col. Harold Smith. The museum was started in an attempt to restore and preserve a collection of combat aircrafts that were used by the United States and flown by all military services. Today the museum provides as a permanent home for display and protection for hundreds of aircrafts in addition to serving as a tribute for the men and women who serviced and flew the aircrafts as well as to those who currently are serving for our country.

While visiting the hangar storing these aircrafts, be sure to stop by the Viet Nam Memorial Garden. Here, visitors will find military hardware and aircraft carriers from the Viet Nam war. There are several air craft carriers, a missile, a M114 Howitzer, and a battle tank. Admirers of all ages will surely appreciate the large machinery used to defend our nation.

In addition to visiting the aircraft hangars, visitors will find inside the museum personal war mementos, uniforms, helmets, home front items, military records, medals, and model displays of ships and aircrafts. One attraction that younger viewers might enjoy is climbing into a B-24 Turret. Can you imagine what it must have been like for a young military person to man two machine guns in such a small space?

The museum is open Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday from 1pm to 4pm. In April of each year, the Highland Lakes Squadron hosts the Bluebonnet Air Show where restored WWII aircrafts are flown. Airplane rides are available in the historic aircrafts as well as for those who are trained parachutists and jumpers, the museum will be happy to schedule a jumping session. The museum is solely run on donations and should you wish to donate artifacts, the museum is currently looking for additional World War II artifacts.
