The History Of A Championship Team: The Indianapolis Colts
The current NFL champs, the Indianapolis Colts
, were created in 1953. They weren't created in Indianapolis at all, though. They actually began as the Baltimore Colts and Maryland was their home state. They finally moved to Indianapolis in 1984 and began to play at the Hoosier/RCA Dome. They are called "the horseshoes", not inappropriately, and their colors are basic blue and white with a horseshoe logo.
When they started out, the Colts seemed an unlikely candidate for any championship title. They played many games in Indianapolis and continued to lose several times. The whole team felt this morale sink and ended up firing their old coach to replace him with Ron Meyer. Meyer's reign marked the start of a new and successful era for the Colts. After Meyer was chosen, the Colts won their last three games of that season.
When Meyer was coach, the Colts started win many more games than they had before. Sometimes they did lose, but ultimately they took home the greatest winning record of the NFL. In 1996, Bill Polian took over for Ron Meyer and started a new takeover of the team. He got rid of older players and selected new blood for the Colts. He also chose Peyton Manning, the quarterback who single handily marked a new era for the Indianapolis Colts.
All the Mannings have a history of being excellent football players, and Peyton Manning was no exception. He helped the team rise to victory from 1996 on. Now they continue to hold the title because of Peyton Manning's leadership ability and excellent football skill.
In 2007 at Dolphin Stadium, the Colts won the Super Bowl, defeating the Chicago Bears. This was something of a historic game because of the rain that fell during the entire game, which was the first to see rain like this in football history. The Indianapolis Colts became the first team in the league to win the Super Bowl in both the rain and an outdoor stadium. This was a huge moment for the Colts.
Johnny Unitas and Art Donovan are among the roster of Hall of Fame players who've been on the Colts. Their team's success can be marked not only by its talent and skilled coaching, but also because of their ability to overcome challenges and make very good strategic player choices.
Unlike most teams, the Colts haven't dealt with drama and troubled relationships within the team that many NFL teams have to deal with. Most of the Colt's conflicts have stemmed from individual players being unable to carry their weight defensively or offensively. There's no sordid history for this team.
The Colts continue to carry their fame and title with pride and hold their training camps in Anderson, Indiana. They have continued to be a team that focuses on the heart of the game: good football playing. They've never gotten bogged down in mistakes or rookie players, and for this reason they've managed to get to the height of success they're at today.
