The History Of Batman Characters

Some of the most popular Halloween costumes that have been around for a very long time are based on the Batman television series and movie sequels

. Although new movies and television shows inspire new costumes each year, Batman has captured the interest of several generations over the decades. The comic super-hero first started entertaining us back in 1939. Since its inception, many characters have been introduced. Besides Batman, Batgirl, the Joker, and Robin are also popular characters that have inspired Halloween costumes. For many decades, Batman dominated the comics section of the newspapers. It wasn't until the 1966 that the first Batman television show was born.

Like Superman, part of the mystery behind the Batman series is his hidden identity, Bruce Wayne, the wealthy businessman. Bruce Wayne's parents were murdered when he was a child and he swore to avenge their deaths. By night, he fights criminals, donning a bat mask and bat wings. Unlike many other superheroes, he does not possess super powers, rather he fights his foes using his intellect, a technologically advanced Bat mobile, and his partner, Robin. Although the television series was short lived, Batman returned to television in a cartoon series. In 1989, the first Batman movie came to screens worldwide.

For many years, no female counterpart played a role in the Batman comics. In the 60s, there was speculation that Batman and Robin were supposed to be lovers. As a result, Batwoman was introduced. Batgirl entered as her sidekick, but both characters were eliminated. Batgirl returned as a different character, Barbara Gordon, daughter of polic commissioner James Gordon. She was much more popular than the previous Batwoman and Batgirl combined. Batgirl lasted about 8 years in the comics, but made her return in the 1999 movie.

Out of all of the devious villains who have appeared throughout Batman's history, the Joker remains one of the most popular. He also makes the list of the top 100 villains across the board. He played a significant role in many of Batman's tragedies. His clown-like appearance was the result of falling into a barrel of chemicals, resulting in pale white skin, bright red lips and green hair. His character was formulated after the Joker playing card. True to his name, the crimes he carries out are usually with weapons that are used to play jokes on people: a squirting acid flower, bladed playing cards and a buzzer that electrocutes people.

Batman is always made fresh and new for current day viewers with the introduction of new technology, futuristic weapons and special effects. But, the story behind Batman's vigilantism has kept the interest of viewers and readers for over 80 years due to the exciting heroism of defeating intriguing villains with super hero methods. With each new Batman movie, the interest is regenerated, sparking the creation of new toys and games, capturing the interest of new young children. We will continue to see the Batman character costumes each Halloween for as long as its creators continue to produce action packed entertainment.
