The History Of Dog Collars And Pet Tags

Dogs have been our canine companion through the dark ages and our relationship with them can be traced back to Egyptian times

. But how did the dog go from being a roaming wild animal free to do as they please, to the collared and leashed domestic pet which we know and love today.

The Egyptians are commonly known as being fond of cats but dogs were also known as the Egyptian's best friend. Maybe not regarded as highly as cats were, having god like status, but they were treated well and valued as protectors. So much so that the Egyptians had laws in place which regulating who owned dogs and how they were treated. Egyptians took their craftsmanship very seriously and as a collar and lease was standard practice when owning as dog, designs for these accessories were as elaborate as human fashion accessories.

Romans saw dogs in a much higher regard than the Egyptians, so much so that Caesar apparently had to sometimes discipline citizens for caring more for the animal than their own children. The meaning of dogs can be seen in lots of Roman art and they are commonly pictured sporting collars and leashes.

In UK during the dark ages dogs would not just sit around being worshipped they were an important tool for hunting and shepherding. Collars were designed differently depending on the job in hand, for example plain leather collars were used for hunting and shepherd dogs got spiked collars to protect themselves from a wolf attack. The more unfortunately role of a shepherding dog would be to sent out as bait wearing a spiked collar to hunt wolves, in most cases dogs just lost their lives serving their master.

During the 16th century as more people in the UK could afford dogs and it wasn't just royalty who enjoyed the pleasure of canine company, collars and pet tags became prevalent. As more dogs were owned or not in some cases, registration was deemed necessary and so the dog licence was established. A pet id tag was useful for many reasons, displaying the dog's name, owner details if it was found astray and more importantly the dog's licence number. Royal decrees were sometimes issued outlining laws such as unruly dogs found without licenses would be killed on the spot. This made pet tags on dog collars an important accessory for owners who wished to keep their beloved pets around.
