The company was first formed in 1874. William Lyle and Walter Scott formed the business in Hawick, Scotland. The company originally worked to create golfing clothes for men. However, over the years the company evolved to include a number of fashions for women.

The company began an alliance with designer Christian Dior to create a series of cashmere clothes. Since then the company has worked to create a variety of new designs and products with the assistance of many other designers. For example, Michael Kors has introduced a number of different products for the company.
