The company was first formed in 1874. William Lyle and Walter Scott formed the business in Hawick, Scotland. The company originally worked to create golfing clothes for men. However, over the years the company evolved to include a number of fashions for women.

Since the company was formed it has worked with a variety of notable names in the world of fashion. One of the most notable brushes with fame came in the 1950s. The company began an alliance with designer Christian Dior to create a series of cashmere clothes. The clothes, which were made with completely pure cashmere, proved to be a hit among women around the United Kingdom.

Since then the company has worked to create a variety of new designs and products with the assistance of many other designers. For example, Michael Kors has introduced a number of different products for the company.

In 1960 the famous Golden Eagle logo that Lyle & Scott is known for was created. The logo would help to create a major identity for the company. In fact, this identity became exposed to more people as more golfers in the United Kingdom began to sport Lyle & Scott products.

In 1975 the company received a Royal Warrant By Appointment to HRH the Duke of Edinburgh. The company is only one of twelve different companies in the UK to have received this distinguished honour.

Over the years more lines have been introduced by the company. The first series of golf clothes for women were introduced in 1985. Also, in 2003 the Vintage collection was introduced. The Club collection of golfing clothes for a younger and more modern audience was introduced in 2009.

In 2004 the company opened a flagship store in London's Covent Garden. Five years later an online store was launched.

In recent years Lyle & Scott has gotten a good deal of exposure outside of the golfing world. The company's wares have been sported by a variety of different celebrities. Among the notable figures who sport Lyle & Scott products or have done so in the past include Tim Lovejoy, Tom Chambers, Steve Jones and Pete Doherty.
