The History Of MMA and UFC

MMA or Mixed Martial Arts was created in 1991 by Art Davie, Rorian Gracie and Michael Tsarion. The Gracie family were heavily involved with vale-tudo which was the prelude to MMA and a mix of Brazilian jujitsu.

The MMA tournaments were originally based on an eight man fight off named War of the Worlds. Started in 1992, the tournament would combine fighters from different specialties of martial arts. The winner would be announced as a champion of the different arts.

MMA hit the TV in 1993 on pay per view channels. SEG Showtime were the only channel to take on MMA and this led to a change in the naming which was the start of UFC Ultimate Fighting Championship. Fighters from all disciplines such as karate, savate, kick boxers and wrestlers all pit against each other. The underlying question in UFC is can a boxer beat a wrestler?

Brazilian jujitsu black belt Royce Gracie who was the younger brother of the founder of MMA, was fittingly the first ever UFC tournament champion using his unique submission skills. The interesting factor about UFC, is there are no weight limits as in other fighting sports. Keith 'The Giant Killer' Hackney collected his name from beating Emmanuel Yarborough, despite having a 5 inch height difference and being 180kg lighter.

Being a new sport, MMA and UFC are continually developing and growing. The 1900's tag line of "there are no rules", collected much criticism which included senator John McCain deeming the sport as 'human cock fighting', thus bringing stricter rules and regulations to save the competitors and its reputation. Europe and Asia have taken on producing shows and tournaments and the world champion fighters now look to UFC to prove they are indeed the Ultimate Fighting Champion.
