. A curious mind would be concerned with finding out whether medical uniforms were always a part and parcel of the medical world and this article seeks to address that. During the early days of medical practice, which go back centuries, nurse uniforms and other medical uniforms were more or less unheard of. Doctors practiced their medicine in their normal attire. What this meant was that the risk of infection was very high as germs would be easily passed on from the doctors clothing to the patient. This was especially the case where the doctor was performing surgery on the patient without a special kind of medical uniforms.

There was a time in the medical world when the measure of a great surgeon was in terms of the amount of blood spatter on their clothes. The introduction of medical uniforms was a much later concept that was preceded by the more basic lab coats. The lab coats paved the way for medical scrubs. Medical scrubs are medical uniforms consisting of a short sleeve shirt and pants. Even now, there are countries in the world that prefer the lab coats to the medical scrubs. In these countries, doctors wear lab coats over the normal attire while attending to patients. However, during surgical medical uniforms such as medical scrubs are used. The reason why these medical scrubs came to be so much preferred is the convenience they provide and the fact that they are easily identifiable. Convenience in this case is due to the fact that they are easy to clean, they are simple to make and affordable to buy even in bulk, and they are structured in such a way that the places where germs can hide are highly minimized.

Medical uniforms, usually medical scrubs come in different colors, though the most common ones are light blue, light green and sometimes a stylish combination of both. When the medical scrubs are for nurses in pediatric wards, the patterns are usually playful, consisting of maybe lollipops, cartoon characters and even flowers. Nursing uniforms have gained wide acceptance all over the world. The traditional nurse uniform has been replaced by nursing scrubs. Nursing scrubs are worn by nurses in place of the more formal traditional nurse uniforms. The upside of the scrubs is that they give the medical world a more relaxed atmosphere. There is something reassuring about being attended to a nurse in scrubs. Maybe it is that less intimidating look that scrubs come with.

So far, scrubs uniforms have proved more popular in USA that in other place in the world. However, private hospitals in countries all over the world have relaxed the traditional lab coat for the doctor and nurse uniforms for the more relaxed scrubs uniforms. Countries in Europe however still prefer the lab coat but the surgeons are required to wear scrubs uniforms when performing surgery.
