The History Of Skating

People have been skateboarding since the sixties and even earlier

. Skateboarding really became quite popular in the nineteen-seventies, with the invention of the urethane wheel. Before the urethane wheel came about, people were skating on decks with hard, clay wheels.

These original decks were made by hand. Often, the shape of a wooden deck was carved out and then a pair of rollerskates would be disassembled. The skateboarders would attach the skate wheels to the wooden board and then ride it. This was very primitive, but worked fine for what the skaters needed.

{Back in the day, skaters werent so obsessed with doing tricks as much as they were with becoming street surfers. The skateboard was created by surfers who wanted something to do on the days that the waves were bad. The skateboard has evolved much since then.|In the olden days, skateboarders didnt really worry about pulling off awesome tricks. The skateboard was created as a way to surf the sidewalk when the waves werent big enough to ride. Since these days, the skateboard has greatly evolved.

During the mid-seventies, skateboarding became an icon. Many new skating companies were developed during this time. While the skateboard companies grew and made products, people were looking for places to skate. Thankfully, new skateparks were being built almost every day.

In the early eighties, skateboarding started to evolve even more. The soft urethane wheels that had replaced the clay wheels began to get harder. These harder wheels were much better for skatepark skating, and also for doing tricks.

Not only did the wheels evolve, but the shape of the decks evolved, too. The basic skateboard decks that were manufactured in the seventies were fairly flat and thin, except for a slightly raised kick tail.

The boards of the eighties evolved into something that was better for trickboarding. They had deep concaves, a slightly raised nose, and a thick kicktail. These improvements made doing tricks such as the newly invented ollie much easier to perform.

Skateboarding evolved again in the early nineties. This time, the wheels got a little bit smaller, the trucks got lighter, and the skateboard decks became a universal popsicle stick shape.

This style deck was much better than the shape that dominated the eighties because it was much lighter and less bulky than the old decks. It was also symmetrical. This symmetrical deck allowed skaters to land on the board in different ways, allowing more cool tricks to be created.

Other than some notable manufacturing improvements, such as faster bearings and lighter trucks, modern day skateboarding hasnt improved much. It seems that the deck of the 90s is the most optimal for skateboarding, and will be here to stay.
