The History Of The Citroen BX

The History Of The Citroen BX

The Citroen BX was the large family car designed by Marcello Gandini and produced by the French manufacturer from 1982 until 1994. During its 12 years of production a huge total of 2,315,739 Citroen BXs were built.

Citroen then ceased production of the hatchback model in 1993 to make way for the arrival of the Citroen Xantia, although the estate continued to be produced for a further 12 months.

The Citroen BX was first launched in Paris in 1982 under the Eiffel Tower, its release came with a huge advertising campaign both here in the U.K and in Europe. The French campaign had the slogan "J'aime, J'aime, J'aime" (I love, I love, I love) and was shown with music that had been especially written by Julian Clerc, who also appeared in the adverts in the 1990's.

Over her in the U.K it was advertised as the car that "Loves Driving, Hates Garages." This was to try and promote the car as having low maintenance requirements and to emphasise on its great new reliability, unlike that of their previous models and the Citroen GS.

The Citroen BX was one of the first cars to be released from Citroen after the great merger with fellow French manufacturer Peugeot in 1976, and it shared the platform with the Peugeot 405 which was released from them in 1987.

The new Citroen came with many new features that really made it stand out from the competition, one of the main features that it had was the "Hydro pneumatic Self-levelling" suspension. Now a well know trait of the brand.

They also released the models with extensive use of plastic body panelling the bonnet, tailgate, and bumpers, and the Citroen BX also came with front and rear "disk-brakes".

The Citroen BX was available in a range of engines that were all new from the PSA joint venture, ranging from a very bizarre for the cars size 1.1L engine (only available in certain countries) up to a good 1.9L petrol engine.

It wasn't until 1984 that there was a diesel engine released, and this was the class leading XUD 1.9L, this then became the most popular of the engines, of which the estate version became the bestselling diesel car in Britain.

Optional extras were a plenty, especially for this car in its class and for its size. Models of the Citroen BX has the option to add anti-locking brakes, air conditioning, electric windows and mirrors, a power sunroof, a remote central locking system or even leather upholstery.

During its span of production many variations and special editions were made, and some even collector item today!

The main qualities and good points when looking for a used Citroen BX are that for its age and size fuel economy is quite good, they are cheap to buy, although finding a used Citroen BX in excellent condition will be a bit of a struggle. As with most used Citroens these days the ride quality is excellent, and has been describes as a magic carpet ride, handling in the used Citroen is also of very good standard.

The height adjustable suspension is a great feature and quality of the used Citroen BX, it was also well reviewed for its estate model, and at the time of release it had a brilliant design and was renowned for its light weight for its size.

Citroen owners old and new were impressed, and the Citroen BX became a great success, with the British market taking to it instantly. It became popular like no other Citroen had managed to do so before.
