The History Of The Shopping Mall

The history of the shopping mall is a phenomenon that can be traced back to the bazaar

of ancient times, where you provided people with everything that they might need under the same piece of cloth functioning as a roof. These bazaars were located inside the protective walls of medieval cities, and farmers travelled great distances, sometimes for days at a time, to set-up shop in form of a small cart/street-stall.

The bustle of an event like this of course attracted a wide range of people and vendors, as local artisans put their show-pieces up for display, and craftsmen demonstrating their substantial ability with showing up their work for all the curious customers passing by. This was not only a fun thing to do on a Sunday, these markets were the core economic engine for vast areas, for a lot of people these places were the only place where they could off-load their merchandise and also getting a fair price for it. And with the attraction and crowds a well-known market brought to its host city, it became a win-win for everyone since the old ale-houses got filled to the brim with happy campers celebrating the excellent deals they had made that day, or distraught farmers burying their worries of a bad market price for their grains with staring to deep in to the bottom of a couple of pints.

And with great distances to travel, the lodgings and hotels always felt a big surge in business as market day grew closer. The selling and buying could go on for days, and with every out-of-town participant in need of shelter, food and drink, this was great news for the city as a whole.

Form Of Interaction

From that day onwards that type of combined all-under-the-same roof successes has led to the evolvement and spread of our modern-day version of it. They started to spring up here and there during the early 20thcentury, making it more convenient, easier and faster for people to conduct all their shopping at once.

But the great success of these kind of establishments, is their social function. How many high school movies do not feature a mall at least as one of the supporting characters. The establishment is not only a place for the exchange of money and business, it is not a place you just rush through to get it over as fast as you can. No, the mall is a place to socialize, it is a place to meet friends and drink coffee, to gossip, to fall in love, to see a movie, it is a place forming your adolescent years, making it forever attached to the dreamy look-back on your golden years.

These kind of establishments, that has sprung up in and around our cities, has almost become a symbol for the values we hold true, for the freedom we associate with the shopping mall does not seem to fade away.
