The History Of The Washing Machine, From Its Early Days To Modern Times

A washing machine is an appliance that is truly part of the fixtures and fittings of our homes today

. We value our washing machines above many other modern appliances. How on earth did we manage without them? When you consider that women didnt used to work in the days prior to the washing machine you can understand why. Scrubbing boards were the tool of choice for cleaning clothes the compromise was often by not washing clothes very often or wearing soiled garments.

The job of doing the laundry in the days before gas, electricity and running water doesnt bear thinking about using sand to scrub out dirt and using stones to dislodge dirt then wringing them out in a nearby water source. There was a lot more dirt to remove in the olden days as we lead rather pampered lifestyles today, there is no need to forage for food as our predecessors were forced to do in the quest for survival.

The first washing machines that were ever invented were hand operated, however this was still a welcome addition for any housewife as they eliminated the need for scrubbing by hand. The machines were made from wood which proved to be a tad inconvenient as the water needed to be reused. The next washing machine was to be made from metal with a fire beneath it that kept the water heated up.

Wringers or mangles were also invented they were the equivalent to the spin cycle, saving a lot of blisters from hand wringing. When the first electric washing machines were invented that is when they became a much sought after appliance revolutionary and momentous. Electric washing machines were a long time coming as it had taken years of trials and tribulations, along with the overcoming of obstacles.

Washing machines were top loaded to begin with and still needed much improvement to bring them closer to the marvellous machines we know today. It was in the 1930s that we saw the washing machines being mass produced and more attention was paid to the intricacies of the central operating systems.

In the early days washing machines did still required a certain amount of human assistance and it was very much a labour that was made easier with each breakthrough, until eventually technological advancement meant the washing machine could be finely tuned.

The washing machines we know today have it all worked out with circuit boards and cycles pre-programmed to suit all types of material. Simply open the door, load the washing, press a button wait and open the door. Your washing can be removed and dried accordingly probably in a tumble dryer an appliance that was a lot easier to invent and perfect.
