If you use the internet it is extremely likely that you have visited YouTube

. This website is the worlds seconds biggest search engine and is the biggest video sharing website in the world. They state that they accommodate 4 Billion video views each day which is almost double the amount of people on the internet itself. YouTube also claim to have and hours worth of video uploaded on to the website every second.

YouTube has a rich history which is actually quite surprising for many people. Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim are the people behind the launch of this website and they were all former employees of money transfer site PayPal. The idea for the website apparently came from the fact that Hurley and Chen had trouble sharing a video of a dinner party and this is when they began developing the idea. The website was launched 14th February 2005 and the headquarters for the website were originally in an apartment above a Japanese restaurant.

Over the next few months they developed this website to get it ready and the first video was uploaded on the 23rd April and this video was of Karim at the Zoo. The first comment on this video said ''interesting concept this YouTube I wonder what will become of it'' and from then YouTube began to take off. Between November 2005 and April 2006 receive $11.5 million investment from Sequoia Capital to help the website expand.

By July 2006 there were 65,000 videos uploaded onto YouTube after its official launch in November 2005. Up until that time the website was a beta which means they were testing it to find any problems that may occur. In October 2006 Google had announced that they had acquired YouTube for a reported $1.56 Billion in Google Stock which is a great return considering the website had only been live for 20 months. During the next month YouTube faced its first lawsuit which was filed by Universal tube who claimed their website had suffered an overload of traffic on a regular basis because of the similar URLs.

YouTubes URL was www.youtube.com while Universal Tubes URL was www.utube.com and this confused many people who confused the websites. This lawsuit failed and since then universal tube have change their URL to www.utubeonline.com . From then Google kept financial details for YouTube secret but in 2008 Forbes estimated YouTubes revenue topped $200 Million generally from advertising on the website.

Between 2007 and 2008 YouTube made agreements with NBC and Lion Gate Entertainment to post full-length movies and TV shows on the website. The reason they did this was apparently to rival websites like Hulu who were regularly hosting shows from Disney. In the UK there are over 4000 TV shows available to viewers from various sources and in 2010 YouTube launched a film rental service for the US, Canada and the UK with over 6000 films available to rent online. During this same year YouTube became the first website to host a completely free broadcast of a major sporting event as they hosted crickets Indian Premier League. Since then they have been hosting various sporting events and many musicians now have their concerts streamed live onto YouTube and these attract millions of viewers.

In March 2011 YouTube launched a new design for their website which was meant to be easier to use but this was met with various compliments and complaints. Around this time Google+ was launched and this was designed to integrate YouTube and the Google Chrome Browser. Then again in December 2011 YouTube redesigned its user interface so that it was easier to use for people and this design still stands today and is actually popular amongst users. At the same time of this YouTube launched a new logo which at first glance looks the same as the previous logo but when you compare the 2 websites you can tell that the new logo features a darker shade of red.

YouTube is still growing around the world and its website is hosted in 39 countries worldwide and is available in 54 languages. This is a great achievement considering that the website was only launched 7 years ago. YouTube now advertise on videos and there are approximately 3 billion videos on YouTube that have advertisements on them and the people that upload these videos do receive a share of the money made from their videos.
