The History Savannah Cat

In 1986, a cat breeder named Judee Frank crossed a male serval owned by Suzi Woods

with a Siamese domestic cat, and the very first Savannah was born (and named Savannah) on April 7, 1986. This new breed attracted the attention of Patrick Kelley, a cat breeder who was so enthusiastic about the Savannah that he worked hard towards establishing the new domestic breed and making it a part of The International Cat Association (TICA). He sought help from other serval breeders with his endeavors in developing the new breed. Finally, he grabbed the attention of a breeder by the name of Joyce Sroufe and she helped him to take the appropriate steps in gaining recognition for the new breed. They wrote the very first version of the Savannah breed standard in 1996 to present to the TICA. In 2001, the TICA finally accepted the breed and registered it as a new domesticated cat.

The Savannah cat became so popular after it was first introduced that breeders from all over the globe began to try their luck at crossbreeding their own, various domestics with male servals. There were some reports of several failed attempts that ended with stillborn young and caused sterility issues somehow involved with the use of male serval cats. This led to further studies by researchers that ended up developing several types of breeds that were called the F1, F2, F3, F4 and F5 breeds. The new breed's popularity, which began with the very first Savannah cat bred, was the reason for more research and development of the breed, and this led to several more types of the Savannah breed that exist to this day.

The timeline

The first offspring of the two breeds was known as the F1 generation, which means in genetics that it is the first filial. There were several attempts to cross the breed in the beginning that failed to produce live young and even when they did have success, the male cats were born sterile and remain that way to this day. The F1 females, however, were born healthy, were very fertile and can be bred to male domestic cats, which is in keeping with how the Savannah cat was first bred.

Though the F1 breed had its share of issues, a new generation was on the rise and it was called the F2. However, the F2 Savannah still ran into the same male sterility issue that the F1 Savannah had encountered. The F1 and F2 sterility issues led to further testing, which produced the F3, F4 and F5 Savannahs. The F3 finally showed some signs of hope with reproduction. The F3 males would occasionally produce offspring, however, the F5 is to date the only Savannah that can produce offspring on a consistent basis.

Savannah cats also have been bred as a part of research efforts to study certain diseases in cats, but this is not the usual intention in breeding a new species of cat. However, once the studies began to develop some interesting looking new cats, researchers began to discover that the new breed was not only interesting but also very beautiful and highly domesticated, and calm-spirited, too. Several different types of domestic cats have been bred with male servals and have had different results.

Domesticated wildcats?

The Savannah cat has helped scientists to make many strides in their research into the crossbreeding of domestic cats with wild cats. It has also helped researchers continue to develop information about the behavior of the Savannah breeds and how they relate to humans. Surprisingly, the Savannah cat has proven to be a great companion to humans and have been said to be as loyal as dogs. They are great with children and other pets, as well. They generally relate well to their environments as long as the introduction to a new setting is done correctly and with love and care.

Savannah cats have come a long way through their history and presently they are still one of the most popular cats in the world. People love them for their warm nature, playful spirit and beauty. The Savannah is a cat that will truly be around decades to come, making a rich historical past and bright future for these wonderful creatures.
