The History of Central Avenue

Central Avenue has been an institution in Westchester for longer than most of you have been alive

. The area was first populated by Native Americans before the Dutch settled the area in the 1600s. There were many hardships for the new settlers and the area went through a great deal of turmoil and financial ups and downs for the next two centuries. In the 1850's the area was given a boon when the railroad made its way to this area. Because of the population growth of New York City, many fled the city to the area surrounding Central Avenue.

During this period of time, only those who had the means to commute to New York City for work were moving to this area. It was not as modern as the City and there were none of the amenities that most had grown accustomed to. There were not any stores or shops and everything had to be brought in by the train. This is why only those who could afford the luxuries to be shipped in were moving into the area. It became a haven for the wealthy who hated living in the city.

By the time the roaring twenties rolled around, there was a much larger population and the area was no longer simply for the rich and all the conveniences of living in the city were now available. During the period of the late 1800's and the early 1900s, the area began to invite new business in the way of shops and restaurants. This was the informal beginnings of Central Avenue as the shopping area for Westchester. Since this time, more and more businesses, shops, nightclubs and eateries have expanded the shopping area to what is today. This is one of the most popular spots for spending the day window shopping or having a bite to eat with the family in the area.

Many people come from miles away to take advantage of the open air shopping and the great bargains and deals that can be had when shopping at Central Avenue. Even though this area has been populated for more centuries than history has recorded, it is a modern and bustling community that also features condominiums, houses and upscale apartments. The growth of this area was slow and painful but when it began booming, it seemed as though it would never stop. Anyone who wants to take advantage of a historical yet modern shopping experience should take a day and spend some time browsing the many shops at Central Avenue.
