The History of Ladies Wellies
Wellies are known to most people outside of England by other names such as rain boots or the more common name gum boots. As the legend has it, a member of the British royalty called the first Duke of Wellington asked his shoe maker to modify an existing type of footwear called the Hessian boot in the early to mid eighteenth century. The resulting cow hide leather boot was one that came up to mid calf length and was close fitted and very comfortable. They would stand up to wear and tear really well due to their design and construction and they soon became the boot to wear in battle.
Fashionable young people though quickly adopted this style of boot and in the mid eighteenth century they were all the rage in England. A few years later an American bought the rights from the inventor of the vulcanisation process to make shoes using this process. This process involved heating rubber up to a high temperature and treating it with Sulphur in a patented process that resulted in a very hard and durable kind of rubber. He set up a factory in France and started making shoes out of this vulcanised rubber. They were soon a hit with French farmers who worked in the fields as they were an immense improvements over the wooden shoes or clogs that were popular in Europe at the time.
A few decades later before the onset of the first world war the manufacture of men's and ladies wellies had moved back to England and labourers and farmers had adopted them in droves. The company that made them got an order from the government to manufacture the boots in large numbers for the army and this made them one of the most ubiquitous pieces of footwear in the country and in the world at that time.
Flash forward a few decades to the nineties and ladies wellies had become a symbol of fashionable British country living style. And after a number of celebrities were spotted wearing these durable boots around the country at venues like fashion festivals they became all the rage. Today they are available in a range of bright colours and wacky prints that make them fun and zany while keeping their original qualities of durability and protection from the elements intact. So go out and get yourself a great pair of wellies if you plan to go to the country side this summer and don't want to get your feet dirty.
