The History of Motorcycles in a Nutshell

Motorcycles have been a rage among boys and men alike

. Men, of all age groups, adore their motorbikes and keep them as their prized possession. The history of motorcycles dates back to the first motorcycle created by Sylvester Howard Roper, which was a coal-powered two cylinder steam engine. After this invention, it was Gottlieb Daimler who came up with the Gas engine motorcycle which had a gas engine attached to a wooden bike. There were many early inventors in the nineteenth century who had started working on the motorcycle and its development but later on moved on to other inventions.

There were only inventors such as William Harley and the Davidson brothers who remained developing the motorcycle while their competitors arose and grew. For example- Merkel, Schickel, Excelsior, Indian, Pierce, and Thor were among the competitors of the former pioneers. After some time William Harley along with the Davidson brothers - Arthur and Walter - Davidson established the Harley-Davidson company in 1903. There was a quality engine installed in that bike to make it useful for races, however, there was a plan to get it manufactured as a transport vehicle. The first official Harley-Davidson was distributed in Chicago. After the monopoly of Harley Davidson in the motorcycle market, the Japanese companies namely Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha and Suzuki entered the market in 1970s.

After that, the title of the world's largest motorcycle maker remains with Honda only. Today all these four giants have penetrated and captured almost every motorcycle maker in the world. Not only do they dominate all the markets but also their products are regarded as very high quality motorcycles. In recent years, some of the erstwhile bikes are regaining their lost popularity. For example- the Indian. But of all the people Harley Davidson has been the most successful. Motorcycles have evolved with customer preferences and tastes over the centuries. But it remains the greatest love with guys till date.
