Difficult times

Spain is one of those countries that suffered because of a turbulent history, but this tumultuous history is the same one that made the country appear as it does today, with its unique blend of diverse cultures. It is not the geography that made Spain such an original place since the geography did not undergo many changes. It the history of Spain and the many cultures that ruled over the country at various times that have made it what it is today. The Carthaginians, the Romans and the Phoenicians all founded cities in Spain and left their mark on its architecture, its traditions and customs, its food and its cultural heritage. However, one of the most important cultures in the history of Spain was the Moors. The Arabs arrived on Spanish land in the 8th century. The Spaniards were unable to overthrow the Moors to push them out of the country, as the French did, so the Arabs remained in Spain for over eight centuries. Some historians argue about whether this was a good or bad historical development for Spain, but the Moorish architecture and culture attract millions of tourists every year. During the time of the Moors, some cities fought against their rule and survived as Christian centers in Spain. These small Christian centers grew bigger and bigger until they became kingdoms. These Christian kingdoms are the ones who fought against Moorish rule to regain control of Spanish lands, piece by piece, until the Moorish rulers were driven out.

The medieval culture in Spain has two figures that still appear very often in its traditional festivals: the warrior and the monk. These two figures fought for and prayed for the country, keeping its integrity intact. When the Reconquista finished, another event of major importance for the country took place: Christopher Columbus departed from Spain on his journey to discover the Americas. This began a flourishing commercial relationship between Spain and the Americas, a relationship that led to the thriving financial fortune of the country.
