The History of the iPod
The first ever iPod was released by Apple in 2001. This may come as a surprise to some people, as it really doesn't feel like this nifty little gadget is that old. But it is and it's come a long way since then to become the most popular portable music player in the world. Along with its excellent functionality, the iPod also came with a level of prestige for many years: the cool kids all had one. Today, the iPod has become something of an everyday essential that's accessible to everyone but what did it go through to get here?
When the iPod first came out a decade ago, it immediately rivalled other portable music players like the Creative Zen and similar products. The first iPod was a far cry from what this innovative machine is today, although the classic design has largely stayed the same in spite of several branches leading in different directions in new models like the iPod Mini, Nano and Shuffle series. With its snazzy design and easy to use interface, the iPod took the MP3 world by storm and quickly became hugely popular. Its iconic click wheel mode of navigation was both simple and elegant and allowed any user to familiarise themselves with the workings of the device instantly.
Over the years, iPods became better but not bigger. Like mobile phones, the idea was to make the iPod smaller and sleeker so fans of good looking gadgets would continue snapping up the new incarnations. And they did. With each new model of iPod, more and more got sold, until Apple was raking in the money through sales of one of their most popular products. And over the years, iPods become more and more popular until they quickly achieved market domination. Indeed, nowadays the word iPod' is pretty much synonymous with MP3 player', whether or not the device in question is actually an iPod.
Now that Apple has expanded its iPod device into the world of mobile phones with the much sought-after iPhone, it seems that the company's strength in the market will only continue to grow. And with more versions of classic, mini, nano, touch and shuffle ipods continuing to get released, Apple can be sure of a constant interest in their products as users new and old flock to buy their wares. With fantastic looks, functionality and storage capabilities, iPods are, and will continue to be, a market leader when it comes to portable music.
