The Htc Desire Z Is The Epitome Of A Qwerty Smartphone

Recently launched alongside the HTC Desire HD

, the HTC Desire Z sees the combination of a touchscreen and slide-out physical QWERTY keyboard. An ideal option for those who prefer the use of a physical keyboard over that of a touchscreen but who dont want to compromise on features, the HTC Desire Z has something for everyone.

Measuring 119x 60.4x 14.2 mm, it is impressively slimline for a handset with a separate keyboard unit, and surprisingly lightweight at 180 g. The handset utilises a 3.7 inch S-LCD capacitive touchscreen, which has a pixel configuration of 480x 800 and can display up to 16M colours, resulting in superb rendering of on screen imagery and videos. The screen features accelerometer and proximity sensors, as well as a touch sensitive control panel and optical trackpad. As with the original HTC Desire, the HTC Sense UI makes appearance, offering a highly customisable and versatile user interface.

Users are alerted to incoming calls and messages via both vibration and ringing, with the added bonus MP3 and WAV ringtones support, which adds another dimension to the customisation of the handset. Handsfree communication is a simple task thanks to a built in speakerphone system as well as a 3.5 mm audio jack.

A generous 1.5 GB of internal storage capacity is provided as standard, although there is also an integrated micro SD card slot. This can accommodate a memory card of up to 32 GB, meaning the HTC Desire Z can potentially store thousands of files, be they documents music tracks or video clips etc.

Class 32 EDGE & GPRS provide access to the relevant mobile networks. Super fast web browsing is available in areas with 3G coverage at a lightning fast 14.4 Mbps thanks to an HSDPA connection. An alternative method of browsing the web is achieved thanks to Wi-Fi connectivity, which utilises the signal provided by local wireless Internet routers to provide an impressive browsing experience. Additional connectivity features include Bluetooth and micro USB, which allows the handset to be connected to compatible devices both wirelessly and directly respectively.

There is a built in 5 megapixel camera mounted on the back of the handset, which does a great job of taking high quality still images thanks to its pixel resolution of 2592x 1944. Autofocus and face detection are included along with an LED flash and geo-tagging. The latter functions thanks to GPS and automatically tags the location at which a photo was taken.

The combination of an 800 MHz processor and the new Android 2.2 (Froyo) OS gives a perfect platform for customisation and expansion, with access to the Android Market offering thousands of apps in many different categories which can be downloaded, either for a fee or free of charge depending on the app.
